The City of Hendersonville sits on the northern shore of Old Hickory
Lake. Old Hickory Lake was formed when Old Hickory Lock and Dam
were constructed across the Cumberland River in the 1950s.
Construction started in January 1952 and was completed in June
1954. The lake filled and the project was completed in December
1957. The lake extends 97.3 miles upstream to Cordell Hull Lock
and Dam near Carthage, Tennessee. The United States Army Corps
of Engineers maintains the dam, lock and lake. Old Hickory Lake
and the shore offers numerous recreational opportunities: hunting,
fishing, boating, camping, hiking, picnicking, water skiing,
etc. The Corps of Engineers runs a visitors center.
Hunting and fishing licenses may be obtained at any County Clerk's
Office, most commercial marinas and many commercial establishments in
the area.
